Large breed puppies require a food formula that addresses their physical and dietary needs.  Large dogs are more susceptible to developmental bone diseases, which can result when pet owners overfeed or over-supplement their large breed puppy.  Specially formulated diets control calcium-phosphorous ratios and calorie consumption, thereby decreasing the odds of diseases such as Osteodystrophy and Osteochondroses.  Additionally, large breed adult dogs my experience effects of aging on their joints, digestive system, and heart.  Some dog foods can provide a diet that meets the health profile of the larger breeds, offering the key to maintaining optimal health through your dog’s life.

My american bulldog has been on this for 2 months now. Unfortunately, he has loose really smelly stools, some diarhea, and lots of gas on it. I will have to try something else which is not good since I did so much research thinking Orijen was the best food. It seems like it is kinda luck of the draw with these foods. His skin is really soft, he has lots of energy, and his nails grow really fast though.

2. Neftali on 10/28/2009, said:

Shadow loves his Orijen puppy food. He gives it 5 barks. I noticed he has more energy and his fur is thicker and shinier.

3. Geoffrey on 9/16/2009, said:

Unfortunately, my dog (7-month lab puppy) never got used to this product. I stuck with it for about 1 month, but he continued to have very loose stool. I switched him to Wellness Super5Mix, and his stool was quickly back to normal.

this is the best dog dog food i have ever purchased!

Wellness Pet Food - Large Breed Puppy Health - Dog Food
Rating: | # of Ratings: 29
Base SKU:   076344 | In Stock:   Yes
Wellness Pet Food  Made in the USA

Large Breed Puppy Health - Dog Food - With a longer growth cycle and faster potential growth rate, your large breed puppy has a unique physical composition that creates special nutritional needs.

Controlled Bone Development
Optimal skeletal development depends on appropriate amounts of calcium and phosphorus. We carefully control these mineral levels and then guarantee their accuracy on every bag - so you can be sure your puppy will grow strong bones at the right pace.

Paced, Steady Growth Rate
With a potential growth up to 100 times their birth weight, a large breed puppy's energy intake must be regulated to ensure consistent, steady growth. That's why this special recipe controls calories with 20% less fat than Super5Mix Just for Puppy.

The Right Start to a Healthy Weight
With more weight on larger frames, maintaining ideal body condition is a big concern. Since lean muscle is the foundation of healthy weight, this recipe has 26% protein with 4 quality animal protein sources to help develop strong, lean muscle.

DHA to Support Brain Development
Smart and trainable, large breed dogs often grow up to lead and serve. To help support cognitive development vital to training, we use salmon meal and salmon oil to provide DHA, a fatty acid normally found in their mother's milk.

50% Longer Growth Cycle
Some large breeds are considered puppies for up to 24 months so they need a healthy food that tastes great day after day. With satisfaction guaranteed, we use deboned chicken and whitefish to provide a natural taste that puppies love.

Transitioning to Wellness: It is important to slowly transition your puppy from his/her current diet as it takes a few days for the body to adapt to the new nutrient levels. To transition, gradually mix in the new food over a 5-7 day period, increasing the amount of Wellness each day, so that you are feeding 100% Wellness by day 7.

How to Feed Your Puppy: As puppies grow up they need to learn when, where and how to eat. Depending on age, puppies need to be fed at the same time and in the same place 2 - 4 times per day. Food should be removed after 20 minutes, if not eaten. In the beginning, puppy's food can be moistened with a little warm water. It is very important that your puppy not overeat, as this can lead to skeletal development issues in large breeds.

Determining Feeding Portions: Looking at the chart below, divide the total cups per day by the total number of times you feed your puppy per day to determine the portion size for each meal. Keep a clean bowl of fresh water available at all times. Wellness believes in feeding dry and wet food in combination whenever possible to help increase the level of water in your puppy's diet.

Recommended Feeding Portions (Based on a standard 8 oz dry measuring cup)
Every dog is a little different, so optimal feeding amounts may vary with age, size and activity level. Please use the information below as an initial recommendation only and adjust when needed.

For dogs over 100 lbs:
Add ¼ cup per additional 10 lbs.

For Pregnant or Nursing Dogs:
Since DHA is transferred to puppies in mother's milk, we recommend feeding this during pregnancy and nursing. During this time allow her to eat at will.

Combination Feeding
If feeding with wet food, reduce dry amount by 1/3 cup for every 6 oz of wet food.

Nutrition is only one part of the equation! Be sure to give your puppy plenty of love, plenty of exercise and see your veterinarian regularly to help ensure total wellness.

1. Stephanie on 8/20/2009, said:

We have a 10 month old German Shepherd puppy, MAJEK, who isn't much of a foodie, so what she eats has to have exceptional value. She seems to enjoy Wellness for Large Breeds more than some of the other premium brands she has had during food rotation every 3 months or so and food blends. She has one large meal of kibble/can and one smaller meal of raw/raw bones daily. She has maintained nice slow steady growth and is currently 62 pounds. We are expecting her to finish around 70 pounds and we expect to have her on a large breed puppy food for at least another year.

2. Lori on 8/7/2009, said:

My Golden puppy does very well on this food. His skin is perfect and his stools are small and well formed. He loves the food so much, I can even use it as training treats.

3. Stephanie on 7/16/2009, said:

Doberman puppy loved this food :)

4. Lidia on 7/10/2009, said:

She likes it but sometimes she won't eat it all or just wait until she realizes she doesn't have any other option. I might try something different. Still going to test this a little longer.

5. Richard on 7/8/2009, said:

One of the best puppy foods on the market. Our Boxer loves it.

My golden retriever puppy is doing great on this food. I switched her about a month ago from Purina Pro Plan. Her coat is soft and shiny, her stools are smaller and firm. She made the switch to Artemis Fresh Mix Medium & Large Breed Puppy without any problems. I highly recommend this product.

2. Kellie on 3/11/2009, said:

My German Shepherd puppy loves this food! We changed her diet from another pet shop food to Artemis and we have noticed a big difference in her coat and her stool. The food is a little on the expensive side but it is definitely worth it!

Solid Gold Made in the USA

WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food (bison) - New Formula! High energy diets, like most puppy foods, can promote rapid growth in large breed puppies, which can play a role in the development of orthopedic diseases. WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Formula contains lower amounts of protein, fat, calories, and calcium than Hundchen Flocken Puppy Food to help control the growth process. Research shows that a Calcium level of 1.5% or less is the most suitable for a large breed puppy.

Puppies usually begin eating solid food at 4-6 weeks of age. Food should be moistened with water, milk, or broth. Feed puppies three times a day until four months of age. Then feed two times a day thereafter. We recommend splitting the following daily amounts (cups) between two or three feedings. For larger breed puppies, we recommend our Wolf Cub Large Breed Puppy brand.
