Three college students create a dog toy company while attending class…talk about productive.

While attending college at the University of California at Santa Barbara, three students (including myself) met inside the Harold Frank hall to learn that we would be creating a “fake” product along with a “fake” company for our course in entrepreneurism. After many brainstorm sessions and a plethora of critical thinking, the team decided to stick with our first and most simple idea…a dog toy. A dog toy so great and so amazing that it would cure all the world’s problems. Well, that was our goal.

The day of the presentation, the class sat in anticipation to hear our words about the “pet world” and boy did we come through. To make it even better, we actually produced a toy for the class and not a single group in the history of the course did so for this assignment, until we came along. By the end of the class, we were throwing a Dura Doggie™ product to a high demand of students that were both thrilled and shocked that they had a physical toy in their hands. The air was crisp and the night was late, but energy was flying for the new Dura Doggie™ Company.

Soon after, we decided to take the small class project and introduce it to the world…we had no idea what to expect. Would people like it or would they turn their heads away? Luckily, the world approved and the Dura Doggie™ Disc was thus born. The first store that we ever got into (Dexter’s Deli) loved the product and was getting a highly positive response from their customers…and the disc didn’t even have packaging at this point.

With the new marketplace acceptance and energized drive, the Dura Doggie™ team decided that they needed to do more than just create dog products. They needed to create dog products that would give back and they decided to do so by asking their customers to “Chews Your Cause.” This indefinite campaign would allow our customers to donate to various causes based on the color product they purchased. For instance, orange Dura Doggie toys would represent fighting diabetes and the Dura Doggie team would donate 20% of profits towards that cause. And there would be more than one color and one cause. In the end, their goal of creating dog products that would cure all the worlds’ problem is all starting to come true.

It all began with a passion for bowling, a chocolate soymilk stain, and a very persistent chemist to give birth to the finest pet stain and odor remover on the market.

We cannot tell the story of Fizzion unless we first explain the preeminent role that bowling plays in all of this. In Lake Wales, Florida there is a "little" company called Kegel. If you are a bowling enthusiast, you would know that Kegel is a world-class leader of manufacturing bowling machines, lane cleaners and supplies.

If you are not a bowling person, you might think cleaning a bowling alley is a very harsh, industrialized process. In reality, it requires great care and precision, almost as delicate as cleaning a piano. Since bowling lanes are comprised of some the finest wood and materials available, these cleaning solutions need to be able to thoroughly clean up the heavy oils that condition the lanes without eroding their wood and protective layers.

In 1999, one of Kegel's very persistent chemists saw a need for a compact, biodegradable and completely water-soluble solution that would absorb these oils and not repel them. After tireless trials, he and his team came up with the innovation that is now known as "Bowling Fizzion". Kegel and this persistent chemist obtained the patent to the first and only completely water- soluble cleaner in the form of a tablet.

Fast-forward two years. The persistent chemist in question, Dennis Sheirs, was deservingly promoted to VP of the Chemical Division for Kegel. Meanwhile, in 2003 some very sizeable companies, who caught on to the unique power of Bowling Fizzion, began inquiring about how they could evolve the product into a more ubiquitous cleaner.

With two kids, two dogs and a white carpet, Mr. Sheirs was used to working on stains and odor. One day he had a serendipitous accident occur at his home. His 2 year old daughter was drinking chocolate soy milk (which happens to be a culprit of stubborn stains) and spilled it on their sofa as she had done one too many times in the past. Frustrated with the poor results of his household cleaners, he decided to try Bowling Fizzion on the soymilk stain to see what would happen. Sure enough, it worked beautifully and the stain completely disappeared. From there…EUREKA! Fizzion, as you know it, was born.

From 2004 on, the Fizzion team worked on perfecting the product. It was decided that since Fizzion was so effective on protein-based stains such as urine and feces, the team would market this exclusively in the pet stain and odor category. And boy did that pay off…

Nathan Chefetz and Cade Goldenberg, both co-founders, became friends after meeting while walking their two dogs Sonny and Wyatt. Soon after discovering how like-minded they were and that both their educations focused on business, the ideas started flowing. Nathan and Cade decided to create dog toys for their pets out of household materials combined with a dash of ingenuity. Within a few months, neighbors and dogs around the Glover Park residences began to share in the enthusiasm!

By this point the Wigzi team had formed, and it was time to get down to the business of mass building the durable toys that their own dogs had grown to love. “I’m sick of rubber-smelling toys,” said Nathan. “And I need a strong toy that floats and glows,” said Cade. That was 2007, and today the duo has produced and sold more than 80,000 toys nationally, with over 800 stores carrying their products. In 2011 Wigzi stepped it up a notch to become the second company in the world to produce a USA-made toy and companion treat line. Rubber Smells!
Now that we've got your attention, read this and think twice about buying smelly rubber toys. Its not pleasant for anyone, not even your best friend.
